Mount Fuji is one of the most famous land marks and geographical areas in Tokyo. Mount Fuji is tallest volcano and peak in Tokyo and is considered one of the three "holy" mountains. It is 60 miles away from Tokyo but has surprisingly "touched" it in one of its eruptions. Mount Fuji is featured in many pieces of art and is an important symbol in Japan. I guess you could even say it is a monument. Mount Fuji is also a popular tourist attraction-more than 200,000 people climb Fuji every year! Mount Fuji is 31 miles wide and a whopping 300 miles in height. The tragic 1707 eruption of Mount Fuji is a sad story. It was the 26th of October, the year 1707, and the mighty volcano announces that it has awaken from its slumber. It created earthquakes that measured 8.4 on the Richter Scale. Smaller, however still deadly, earthquakes follow the already horrible destruction. December 16th is when the volcano finally "got out of bed." Magma, lava, and chunks of rock exploded out of the vent. This massive eruption brought down 72 houses and three Buddhist Temples-and that was only the first day. Finally January 1st, 1708, the volcano stopped.
